Moving to Bilbao with your pet? Once an industrial port city, Bilbao reinvented itself around the titanium curves of the Guggenheim Museum and is now one of northern Spain's most liveable cities — green, walkable, and refreshingly free of the crowds further down the coast. We provide professional door-to-door pet transport from anywhere in the UK to the Basque Country via the Eurotunnel.
UK to Bilbao: Route & Journey
The drive from Folkestone to Bilbao is approximately 800 miles and takes 12-13 hours driving + Eurotunnel. Unlike one-way coastal hops to France, a Bilbao run is a single long day or comfortable overnight in Bordeaux, so route planning matters. Our typical road route is:
Calais → A26 → A10 to Bordeaux → A63 to the French/Spanish border at Irún → AP-8 west along the Basque coast through San Sebastián to Bilbao.
Because this is one of our most frequent Spain runs, the team knows exactly which service stations along the way offer shade and easy pet access.
Areas We Serve Around Bilbao
We deliver to all neighborhoods in and around Bilbao, including Indautxu, Abando, Casco Viejo, Deusto, Getxo, Algorta, Sopelana, Portugalete, plus the wider catchment of Bilbao city, Getxo, Algorta, Sopelana, Portugalete, Sestao, Barakaldo, Mungia, San Sebastián / Donostia (extension), Vitoria-Gasteiz (extension). If your address is just outside this list, we usually still cover it — just ask.
The British Community in Bilbao
Bilbao's British community is small but strong — biotech, engineering, and energy sector relocations through the Bilbao Bizkaia investment hub. Getxo and Algorta on the Atlantic coast are the classic family suburbs because of British and international school options.
Climate & When to Travel
The Basque Country breaks the Spanish stereotype — summers are mild (22-26°C), winters are wet and grey but not cold (8-12°C), and the Atlantic keeps everything green. Summer driving is comfortable here even in August.
Vets & Documentation in Bilbao
Bilbao has high-quality veterinary care, including 24-hour emergency clinics in Indautxu and Getxo. AHC paperwork for UK-bound pets is straightforward through clinics that work with the British consulate's relocation contacts.
Our 2026 moving guide and pet passport explainer are the best starting point if you have not sorted UK-side preparation yet.
Living in Bilbao with a Dog or Cat
Bilbao is one of Spain's most dog-friendly cities: huge off-leash zones in Doña Casilda Park, the riverside Etxebarria walk, and the Atlantic coastal path from Getxo to Sopelana. Pintxos bars in Casco Viejo often welcome dogs at quieter hours.

How Long is the Bilbao Journey for a Pet?
London → Bilbao is one of the easier Spanish jobs because the Atlantic route is shorter and cooler than the eastern Mediterranean corridor. Many runs are completed with a single Bordeaux overnight.
If your pet gets nervous, we recommend a settled, well-fed morning before travel and a familiar blanket or toy for the ride. Sedatives are avoided on our journeys, in line with British Veterinary Association guidance that road sedation can lower blood pressure and heighten travel sickness. Instead, our handlers create a calm environment — dim lighting, soft music, and a consistent rhythm.
Local Tip for Bilbao
Bilbao is built into a steep valley with limited street parking. If your address is in Casco Viejo or Indautxu give us a 30-minute window so we can use a loading bay — and ideally meet us at street level.
UK to Bilbao: Documents Checklist
Spain's EU membership means the standard EU entry requirements apply to outbound pet travel:
- ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip (almost all UK pets already have this)
- Valid rabies vaccination — at least 21 days old at the time of travel, never lapsed
- GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel — covers Spain plus onward EU travel for up to 6 months
- Tapeworm treatment is not required to enter Spain (only to return to the UK), but we still note it on the file for the return leg
Before we leave, we double-check every document, so nothing gets missed that could cost you your Eurotunnel booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you say the Bilbao route is easier in summer?
The Atlantic coastal route avoids the inland Spanish heat that affects Madrid, Seville and Costa del Sol runs. Summer journey temperatures rarely exceed 26°C.
Can you deliver to Casco Viejo's narrow streets?
Yes — we park at the nearest goods loading bay (typically Mercado de la Ribera) and walk to your door. Most deliveries are complete within 20 minutes including stairs.
Do you cover San Sebastián / Donostia and Vitoria-Gasteiz?
Yes — both are extensions on the Bilbao route. Donostia adds about an hour of driving but no overnight; Vitoria adds 45 minutes.
Is the ferry to Bilbao a viable alternative?
We do not use the Brittany Ferries Portsmouth-Bilbao route because pets travel in onboard kennels for 24-30 hours. Eurotunnel + drive keeps your pet with us the whole way.
