Wanting to travel with your pet from the UK to Europe for a holiday, a long-weekend at a French gîte, or a six-month sabbatical in Spain? Pet travel across the Channel is straightforward once you know which option fits your dog, cat or ferret — and which paperwork has to be in order before you leave.
The Three Ways You Can Travel with a Pet from UK to Europe
Option 1 — Drive Yourself + Eurotunnel Le Shuttle
You drive your own car, your pet stays in the car the whole time, and you cross via the 35-minute Channel Tunnel. This is the most popular DIY way to travel with a pet because the pet never leaves the family vehicle. You need to book a pet supplement on your Le Shuttle ticket, plus valid AHC paperwork.
Option 2 — Hire PetVoyage for Door-to-Door Service
The most relaxed option for pet travel: a DEFRA-approved driver collects you and your pet from your UK address and delivers you both door-to-door anywhere in Europe. You travel in the same vehicle. Same crossing (Le Shuttle) but with a specialist vehicle and professional handling of the paperwork.
Option 3 — Ferry from Dover/Portsmouth
Possible but not preferred. The pet has to stay alone in the car on the ferry car-deck, and ferries are weather-vulnerable. For most owners hoping to travel with a pet, the Eurotunnel route is calmer, faster and weather-proof.
Comparing the Three Pet Travel Options
- DIY + Eurotunnel: Cheapest if you already drive a car suitable for the pet. You manage all paperwork yourself.
- PetVoyage door-to-door: Professional driver, climate-controlled vehicle, paperwork concierge, fixed price. Best for nervous pets and owners who don't fancy a long European motorway drive.
- Ferry: Cheapest in some seasons, but pet is alone in vehicle for the 90-min to 9-hour crossing depending on route. Higher cancellation risk.
2026 Pet Travel Rules — the Documents You Need
Since 22 April 2026, UK pet passports are no longer valid for entry into the EU. To legally travel with a pet from the UK to Europe you need:
- ISO 15-digit microchip — implanted before the rabies vaccine.
- Rabies vaccination — at least 21 days old.
- Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, dated within 10 days of departure.
- For dogs returning to GB: tapeworm treatment, 24-120 hours before re-entry, recorded in the certificate.
How Pet Travel with PetVoyage Works (Holiday-Style)
- You book the outbound + return trip together on our website or by WhatsApp; we calendar both legs at booking time.
- Day 1 — Outbound: Driver collects you and your pet at home, crosses Eurotunnel, delivers to your French / Spanish / Italian villa.
- While you're on holiday: you keep us posted with the planned return date. Three days before, our concierge contacts your destination-country vet to schedule the tapeworm treatment for re-entry to GB.
- Return day: Driver collects you and your pet from the holiday address, re-enters the UK via Eurotunnel, delivers you both back home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel with my pet on Eurostar?
Unfortunately no — Eurostar does not accept pets except registered assistance dogs. To travel with your pet via the Channel Tunnel you need to use Le Shuttle (the car train) or our door-to-door pet travel service.
Is pet travel safe for older or smaller dogs?
Yes — the door-to-door Eurotunnel route is especially gentle on seniors and small breeds because the pet stays in a single climate-controlled vehicle throughout. Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, French Bulldogs, Persians) particularly benefit because there's no airline breed restriction.
Can I travel with two pets on the same booking?
Yes. We routinely transport multi-pet households. Up to 4 pets from one household travel on the same single fare.
What's the maximum age for pet travel UK to Europe?
There's no upper age limit for road pet travel — we routinely transport 14+ year old dogs and 18+ year old cats. We do recommend a vet check-up before travel for elderly pets.
Do you offer one-way pet travel?
Yes — many customers fly themselves and book us only for the pet leg. We arrange meeting points at airports or villas as needed.
